Oseleta is a native Veronese secondary grape variety with great colour and strength. Rediscovered by Masi in the 1980s, it was first used in the Veronese blend in 1990, thus giving birth to Toar. Its use marks a conceptual revolution in which certain wines traditionally prized above all for their drinkability begin to be made with greater complexity and weight. Oseleta gives structure to the wine, while leaving the typicity coming from Corvina and Rondinella intact. This produces a Valpolicella Classico Superiore with unusual structure and elegance and delineates the style of “tomorrow’s Valpolicella”.

Masi Toar Valpolicella Classico Superiore DOC. Italy. Considered the Valpolicella of tomorrow, this red wine is surprisingly intense and full-bodied with a good tannic content.
Unexpectedly fruity, rich and approachable. The nose combines familiar Corvina aromas with the firm character of Oseleta, the forgotten native variety rediscovered by Masi. The power and audacity of this wine is expressed in its name, Toar, which refers to the volcanic rocks of its vineyards of origin…….,
Though run by the Boscaini family for six generations, it is really in the last fifty years that Masi has established itself as one of the Veneto’s most innovative wine producers. In the late 1950s, they identified certain historic vineyard plots which are vinified as Amarone and bottled separately to this day. In 1964, they launched the now-legendary Campofiorin, which revived the technique of a second fermentation with semi-dried grapes. Masi have also rescued the ancient Oseleta variety from extinction, and continue to use it in two of their celebrated a Supervenetian wines.
This high-end Valpolicella, which until recently was labelled as IGT Veronese, contains the well known Veneto varieties of Corvina and Rondinella together with rare, Masi-rediscovered variety Oseleta. Toar refers to the volcanic soils of the vineyards used to make this wine the local name for volcanic outcrops found here. Italy’s a striking, intense wine with plenty going on.
