The appellation of Moulin-à-Vent is named after a windmill that was built in the late fifteenth century, and remained in active use milling grain until 1850.

Shortly afterwards, the domaine in which it stands was bought by the Chastel-Sauzet family, who still remain in charge today in Beaujolais, France.
